Inspiration

“Perhaps seldom few of us become what we expect to be.”
—FAYBEL, Beautiful Bizarre Magazine artist directory blog post

Growing up, I was consumed by the concept of the “ideal” plan—of what I perceived to be an esteemed path to recognition and success. Nothing about this flawed notion brought me happiness, nor did it reflect my personal potential and the growing limitations of my physical reality with chronic illness.

Stifling my own creativity and its ability to foster joy, for the sake of false self-image and a misguided sense of purpose, one that flippantly sated my fears of self-perceived in-accomplishment—it took years of spiraling physical health before I could understand how wrong my false notion of the “ideal” had been and how wrong I was in the act of dampening my creative self.

“Dancing with Wolves” is an allegory on the pack of tumultuous tides within, some predatory to our own happiness and joy, with false faces and dark internal realities.

The archetypal wolf from the Grimm Brothers’ recount of Little Red Riding Hood makes its vicious play with Ancient Egyptian motifs and symbology, autumnal fine bone china teacup patterns and mask designs of kitsune, the shapeshifting fox spirits of Japanese folklore, in “Dancing with Wolves”. Inspirational notes from No-Face of Miyazaki’s Spirited Away interplay with references to monochrome illustrations by Rovina Cai from Alix E. Harrow’s Starling House; the Japanese television series The Ancient Magnus’ Bride, adapted from the original manga by Kore Yamazaki; and the traditional oil works of Vanessa Lemen. This piece was fashioned in over hundreds of hours, in the supine position, due to spinal injury, with intent to mimic key visual motifs from my prior works, High Art Competition’s 2025 Top 150, “Many Faces of the Dreamer” and Japanese ink painting (sumi-e) styled “The Never Queen”, a part of Curio Art Gallery’s 2024 group exhibition, "Memoir".

“Dancing with Wolves” acts as an inaugural piece for the digital medium at Poetic Tiger Gallery (online), during a time in which the perception of digital in fine art is voraciously tested, in part by the overwhelming presence of A.I. generative technologies.

"His magic was slow, soft touches to make my mind feel nothing, my flesh, everything. The dress serenaded my skin: our letters a fabric—their whisperings words disquieted, entangled in the rustle of satin. My embossed scrawl glistened with his penned flourishes, abed on molten parchment that hummed against skin. Each gilded leaf hazed my thoughts—the sensation, an ambrosia that smeared all vision. The crush of silk fastened and belled to a golden gown, caging the cliff notes of our tale within."

Timbretock: a dark Fairytale

In Timbretock, an ancient time-devouring fae of the same name meets an ill-fated boy, Luan, that is not a boy, but a once mirthful, dancing speck of sea-foam in a wave’s rolling masquerade dance. He is cursed to return to the surf of the sea, the Ball of Glass Waters, and leave the girl who entranced his heart. Luan selfishly fractured the laws of his kin for Miyako, turning mortal to dispel her from a ritual drowning. Made sacred vessel of the living night, yet to have survived it, Miyako struggles to live a life that is hers, drawn to Luan and his web of glass lies. The time-mongering fae, Timbretock, too has secrets—one a steep bargain for Luan, the boy that is not a boy, to change their fates.
The original blurb from digital artist FAYBEL's romantasy narrative:

Timbretock: Brief Passage

A jumbled Rubik’s cube of musings ripple the still waters of a human’s mind. I sensed them—the strange beings. They dwelled in scant dwellings: some thrummed with thoughts despised, disquieted as a droning hive.

My Timbretock ticked: the clock, its florid wings a flutter, siphoned my senses, biting my flesh with pistons that prick.

A black apple, a token, pressed my palm. It sang its timely pleasure, as we pranced through a flat to tick tock tick. Mid the metronome’s dance, the butterfly and I, we paused to sight and sit.

Inspiration & Timbretock Romantasy Lore

Includes lore from digital artist FAYBEL's romantasy narrative about the character from this piece, Simay, and her sister:
“Many Faces of the Dreamer” was inspired by brushwork from the paintings of contemporary figurative artist Soey Milk; Monet’s classic “Water Lilies”; and cover art from the manga “Jovantore” by Daniel Eichinger, the fabric from which is rose-like in form.

Simay from “Timbretock” and her bloodline’s propensity for divine possession does, after a ritual awakening, lend her and her fellow possessed lineage characteristics increasingly reminiscent of the undead—their physical bodies being under a spiraling state of duress. The god-touched, like Simay and her sister Miyako, are generally lost without significant alchemical intervention, some such interventional practices involving the red flower moon.

The god-touched bloodline consists of those who have the potential to be mentally entwined with the conscious of dream-keeper divines, beings born under the influence of quicksilver ichor in the blood. The Nightstrider divine, Simay's sister Miyako’s dream-keeper, is never intended to survive its awakening within the sibling's cultural community and own mind. The awakening of the Nightstrider is an emergence of the divine being within the mind of a member of the god-touched lineage: Nightstrider gives its host the ability to siphon and manifest the dark emotions of all living creatures into night-terror wraiths. Ichor, within which these divines manifest, slowly poisons and withers their host's physical form. See trope “Parasitic Immortality”. Simay's dream-keeper divine is a magical foil to her sister's Nightstrider.
